Artist Statement
Hi I'm Nick Dooley. I've been street performing as a guitarist for nearly 20 years.
Busking can be a good way to "get by" playing other people's music, but I've found it's not a good way to build an audience for your original work.
Being a singer songwriter means it can be difficult to find your audience. The music I produce is so personal that it's unlikely to receive the type of mass appeal or attention that would warrant a big label release.
There are people that like my music but the challenge has always been in finding and connecting with those people (and making money in the process).
I'd always thought that perhaps the internet would provide me with the opportunity to find, connect with and sell to, people who appreciate my music.
Deciding how to do it, which platform to use, where to release, what format to release the music in, the legal implications - it was always too big a barrier and I was paralysed into inaction by the enormity of it all.
When my son, Iain Dooley, pointed out this recent experiment by comedian Louis C.K and said "let's just ignore all the practicalities of this and put up the simplest page in the world with some of your music on it with a PayPal button and see what happens" I was a little hesitant at first but then I realised that the most important thing to me as a musician is that people hear my music and enjoy it.
This is basically like busking on the internet. If people like what I'm doing I presume they will support me so I can continue doing it!
